Emily In Paris is so incredibly bad it’s good - for a laugh.
The premise is that a young girl from Chicago who speaks no French at all is transferred to Paris, given an apartment that would cost roughly 5,000 euros a month and is working for a marketing firm that seems to spend one hour a week working for clients and the rest of the time sitting in cafes.
Emily then must learn how to operate in France. But the thing is she is totally oblivious and a total basic bitch (which is pointed out to her often.)
The things that people who are not from France learn in about a week take her months. For example she’s constantly trying to go into her downstairs neighbors apartment because she doesn’t realize the ground floor doesn’t count.
For me that would take roughly a day.
And what really brings her down low is that instead of appreciating what’s great about Paris, she moralizes about it very loudly.
For example they are filing a perfume ad and you get see the actresses butt. She goes mental that this is somehow sexist. In a French perfume ad for christ sakes. (And don’t get me started about her older female boss having a fling with a client - this drives her batshit insane.) She even thinks the French word for orgasm is gross.
She even dates a semiotics professor and is shocked when he turns out to be a snobbish asshat.
Yet she keeps failing up. Everything she does which would cause an average French person to puke somehow makes her more successful. For example, she lands as a client one of the major haute designers in Paris because she tells him how much she liked Gossip Girl.
She puts together a campaign saying “The vagina is not masculine” that has Macron’s wife retweeting it. Yes, really.
Meanwhile she’s constantly worried about losing her job - which given that she has a CDI would be virtually impossible.
I end up wathcing it hoping she finally makes some fuck up that tanks her, but I fear that she’s just going to keep becoming more and more successful even though the only thing she can say in French is “merde.”
Alors.
